The table maths
Start from your confirmed headcount, divide by the seats your venue's tables take, then add one spare table. Rounds of 10 are the most forgiving: they absorb an extra guest without reprinting anything, and every seat has a conversation partner.
- 5ft round — 8 seats (10 at a push)
- 6ft round — 10 to 12 seats
- 6ft trestle — 6 seats, or 8 with ends
- 8ft banquet — 8 to 10 seats
- Head table — 6 to 10, one side only, facing the room
How to group the guests
Seat by relationship, not by rank. Build clusters first — university friends, work, partner's family, neighbours — then place clusters onto tables and only afterwards worry about which table is closest to the couple.
- Never leave one person as the only guest from their group at a table.
- Put families with small children nearest the exit, furthest from the speakers.
- Elderly guests near the head table so they can hear the speeches.
- Keep known conflicts on separate tables with sightlines broken by the dance floor.
Questions
How many guests fit at a round table?
A 5ft (152cm) round comfortably seats 8, and can take 10 if the centrepiece is small. A 6ft round seats 10–12. Long 8ft banquet tables seat 8 (four a side) or 10 with an end seat each.
How many tables do I need for 100 guests?
Ten tables of 10, or twelve tables of 8 with a little slack for late RSVPs. Always plan one spare seat per table — someone always brings a plus-one you did not expect.
Do I need a head table?
No. A sweetheart table for two, or seating the couple at a normal round with close friends, both work. A head table of 6–10 is the traditional option and eats a lot of floor space.
